The following was sent to us via private messaging earlier this year from someone named "Betty (;u=7196)".  We responded but we never heard back from Betty (;u=7196).  We wanted to move the correspondence to this public board in the event anyone else did not have all the information regarding Vigna Caracalla vs. Phaseolus caracalla (

You have Phaseolus caracalla ( misidentified as Vigna Caracalla.  Two very different plants.  The photo is Vigna Caracalla, which is pollinated by ANTS, not bees.  Also... your website is hard to use, covered in ads, & asking people to register before they can send you feedback is lame. I do not want spam from you, so I will now cancel my registration.

Hello Betty (;u=7196),

Thank you for your comments.  I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, but a minor glitch in our forum software prevented us from receiving your message until recently.

1.  We do not spam our members.  We receive thousands of visitors per day and site registration helps promote legitimacy in the many inquiries submitted to us.  Since coming online in 1999, we have never mass-emailed our members.  Members have complete control over their own individual forum alert settings.

2.  Our site is free for everyone to use.  Advertisements on our site help offset the cost of running and maintaining the website.

3.  Now, on to your gardening inquiry... :)

Our picture and description of Phaseolus caracalla ( is supported by the following sources:

The Jefferson Monticello (
The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) (;jsessionid=DB2C0AEBF66EA38860C0D5BC942F666B?id=316256-2&
The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) (

Vigna caracalla has only been used as a synonym of Phaseolus caracalla since 1970.  However, Phaseolus caracalla is the original plant genus and species going back as far as 1753.

Please let us know if you have any other gardening questions or concerns about our site.

Happy Gardening!
